Old But Gold

An interesting article from last year by WP columnist Richard Cohen, taking a non-partisan stance on the Israel-Palestine conflict — always tough to do. Some excellent points, and a fine walk on a very delicate tightrope. I’m posting it now because I stumbled on it.

The problem I have with this piece is that Cohen does not acknowledge the fact that no matter how much Israel hunkers down, it faces the crushing fact that it is surrounded by not just poor Palestine, but rich nations who resent its very existence; no solution will ever be good enough, except the complete non-existence of a Jewish nation state. That, rightfully, will never happen. In that context, is it really fair to ask them to “hunker down with history?”

After my thesis is done, please remind me to start working on finding a way to make everyone just get along…
